To support data rates of 400Gbps and beyond, the Consortium for On-Board Optics (COBO) was formed three years ago to develop an industry standard for high-bandwidth on-board optics. COBO has recently published the OnBoard Optical Module Specification, which includes standards for 400Gbps and 800Gbps capacity. This white paper examines the work of COBO, its impact on the future outlook of networking, and provides an overview of the specification itself.
