Google & Alphabet CEO Calls for AI Regulation

Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has laid out his case for greater regulation of artificial intelligence. He has highlighted serious security issues that can occur because of misuse of facial recognition technique. He suggested that regulation should be nuanced, balancing mitigation of “potential harms" with space for "social opportunities.”

“There is no question in my mind that artificial intelligence needs to be regulated. It is too important not to. The only question is how to approach it. We need to be clear eyed to figure out what could go wrong with adverse effects."

~ Sundar Pichai, CEO, Google and Alphabet Inc. as said to Financial Times

In spite of the fact that Pichai says new guideline is required, he advocates a careful methodology that probably won't see numerous critical controls put on AI. He takes note of that for certain things or systems such as self-driving vehicles, suitable rules and regulations need to be applied. Apart from this, in otherareas such as robots for home services, existing system can be extended to cover AI-assisted items.

AI plays a very important role in daily walks of life and is bringing major changes using advanced technology. It has been a reason for many advancements like Google assistant, systems in healthcare that detects breast cancer and building system that is helping airlines to reduce flight delays.

Whatever rulesare made, they won't mean a lot, unless there is a realistic solution that can be really followed. As Pichai put it, "rules that stay on paper are negligible."

Sundar Pichai's comments came out as lawmakers around the world raised the concern and requested to regulate use of AI in the fields such as facial recognition. The question is how can it be done in a way that doesn't kill the innovation as well as balance the beneficial use of AI. He noted that there is an important role of government to play for regulation of use of AI.

Right now it seems that AI regulation plans of U.S. and EU are different. Addressing a European audience about the "negative consequences" of technology, Sundar Pichai called for a balanced approach to regulating artificial intelligence. Earlier this month the White House published regulatory principles to govern the development and use of AI. Through this it has requested Europe to avoid aggressive approaches that can prove harmful. In order to regulate it, EU is taking direct interventions like 5 year ban on facial recognition.

In previous year, Google announced that it will not use AI in applications related to weapons, surveillance that violates international norms, or technology that go against human rights and violate it. Pichai's comments indicates that this is the reason Google does not sell facial recognition technology. But at the same time, hedoes not call for rivals who sell advanced AI facial recognition technology who are also competitors like Facebook and Amazon.
