Algolux has been Chosen to Participate in The Mercedes-Benz AG-Led AI-SEE Project for Its Robust Perception in Poor Visibility Situations

Algolux, a worldwide recognised computer vision software business, has been chosen to join in Mercedes Benz AG's AI-SEE project to ensure safe driving in low visibility conditions. Algolux, which was recently named to the 2021 CB Insights AI 100 List of the world's most innovative AI startups and won the Most Outstanding Autonomous Vehicle Technology Innovation at the 2021 Tech.AD Europe Awards, will collaborate with 20 world-class OEM and supplier partners over a three-year period to enable Level 4 autonomy for mass-market vehicles. The goal is to create a novel robust sensor system powered by artificial intelligence to improve vehicle vision in low visibility conditions.
The ideal of autonomous driving will not be fulfilled unless there is verified safety for all road users. Only when automated vehicles can operate in a dependable way at all times will they be ready for market introduction. This demands an all-conditions competent Autonomous Driving system that can assure safe travel in every relevant weather and illumination situation such as snow, severe rain, or fog. The sensor data obtained will be fused and simulated by powerful AI algorithms suited to unfavourable weather perception needs using a multimodal data fusion technique. This novel sensor device, together with an HD dynamic map, will enable localization performance in adverse weather circumstances 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Algolux will provide technology and domain experience in deep learning AI algorithms, data fusion from several sensor types, long-range stereo sensing, and radar signal processing to assist the AI-SEE project in meeting its objectives. Recognition of all road users in adverse weather circumstances is a crucial goal of advanced driving systems. Existing sensing systems fail when fusion is impossible due to a lack of redundant information. For example, sensor measurements that are distorted in one measurement (e.g., LiDAR backscatter in snow) may not be deformed in others (intensity camera). To address this issue while also providing redundancy in excellent conditions, Algolux employs a smart fusion technique that serves as the system's control centre or "brain," resulting in a more robust perception platform that can be employed in any lighting or weather situations.

The project's innovations will not only boost Europe's competitiveness by enabling the market deployment of L4 automation by 2030, but they will also save time and money in the development process.
As a result, AI-SEE has the potential to be a game changer in the worldwide race for the first automated vehicles to enter the market and pave the way for safe automated driving.
Under the PENTA EURIPIDES2 label, the project will be co-funded by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP), the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), Business Finland, and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research BMBF.

AI-SEE is a project supported by PENTA EURIPIDES2. EURIPIDES2 is a EUREKA Cluster that encourages the development of innovative, industry-driven, pre-competitive R&D projects in the field of Smart Electronic Systems. Twenty-one organisations have pledged to develop a revolutionary, robust sensing system powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will enable automatic travel in unpredictable traffic and weather circumstances.
Project duration: 36 months, beginning on June 1, 2021. The total cost is €21.58 million.
