Node.js is an open-source and very powerful framework/cross-platform JavaScript run-time environment. Node.js executes the JavaScript code on server-side. It is built on Google Chrome’s JavaScript engine (i.e., V8 Engine). Before introducing Node.js in the market, JavaScript was used only for client-side scripting where scripting is embedded in web page’s HTML and made to run on client-side by a JavaScript engine in the user’s browser itself.
