Driver's Re-Education: Putting Self-Driving Car Software Through Its Paces

Artificial intelligence enables self-driving cars to exceed human levels of performance and precision. The neural networks underlying the learning of many self-driving cars are constructed by NVIDIA, whose DGX-1 supercomputer can execute 170 trillion deep learning operations per second. By connecting the cars’ software to a data center in the cloud, manufacturers can train the cars by simply exposing them to diferent objects and scenarios. Using an array of visual and light-detection sensors (LIDAR), plus the data collected during training, the car's AI supercomputer can recognize nearby objects by look, sound and behavior. In this case, surrounded by potential hazards, how does the car get to its destination without becoming an accident-prone pushover?
