As 2018 winds to a close, it’s a natural time to take stock of where we are and look ahead to what’s on the horizon for modern infrastructure, aka public and private “cloud.” We’re nearing the end of a year where the industry has truly matured: according to analysts, it is several hundred billion dollars in size and continues its fast growth — and has become the platform for the vast majority of innovation. I’ve spent more than 25 years in the IT infrastructure space, helping lead major disruptions in security, open source, virtualization and cloud. When I look toward 2019, I see four major trends developing — plus one industry prediction that may ruffle some feathers, but after a quarter century in the business, I call them like I see them.

To do that, the company this week unveiled Cisco Cloud ACI for AWS, which follows on the ACI Anywhere initiative the company previously announced in order to broaden ACI's reach to the AWS and Microsoft Azure clouds. At the time, Cisco said its ACI Anywhere datacenter networking initiative provided flexible deployment options, along with the ability to deploy apps based on business needs criteria rather than technology limitations. "It delivers operational simplicity, application agility and protection in the datacenter -- all delivered in a uniquely open approach that integrates with all hypervisors and container frameworks on which applications are deployed," the company said in announcing the initiative in January. The partnership covers seven “open source-centric” companies in the areas of data management and analytics: Confluent, DataStax, Elastic, InfluxData, MongoDB, Neo4j and Redis Labs. “Google’s DNA, if you look at Kubernetes and TensorFlow, is that we realize companies work best who are collaborative, not combative,” Manvinder Singh, head of infrastructure partnerships at Google Cloud, said in a pre-conference press briefing. Noting the adoption of open-source software is on the rise, Singh said there has been a debate over the best way to deliver them. “On the one hand, customers want open source, but an experience that is cloud-native, integrated and a managed service,” he said.
