SpaceX launching dark satellites to allow new discoveries of astronomical research

  • SpaceX is launching a set of dark satellites after being hit by backlash from astronomers.

  • Expert says this is not the ultimate solution and it is a tough feat of engineering to color satellite darker and astronomers says it doesn't tackle many different issues they have pointed about mega-constellations of satellite.

  • Space has already put 180 satellites into orbit and it plans to launch 42,000 satellites into orbit to beam the internet down to remote parts of the earth.

In the predawn hours of November 18, 2019, Northwestern University astronomer Cliff Johnson noticed a huge swarm of unfamiliar objects streaking across the sky. According to the observation, SpaceX's satellites are messing up astronomers' observations as it is ruining the view of nearby galaxies.

SpaceX has responded this situation with a solution: Make the next batch of satellites dark. The company launched 60 satellites coated in an “experimental darkening treatment.” The new satellites are covered in a special coating that are intended to make them blend to into the night sky.It is an attempt to avoid criticism from astronomers that the internet satellites are filling up the sky with lights and could block out the view of stars for scientists studying the cosmos.

“ The company has launched 60 satellites coated in an experimental darkening treatment. The new satellites are covered in a special coating that are intended to make them blend to into the night sky.”

The new dark coating is the "first step" towards a compromise between Elon Musk's space company and astronomers who complain that the SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, carrying 60 more satellites, blasted into a cold, clear night sky and making it difficult to study of Galaxy.

Among SpaceX's many rocket launches and plans to take over Mars, it has a more Earthling-focused project. Its Starlink project aims to put up to 42,000 satellites into orbit around the Earth, where they would beam down data providing internet to remote parts of the globe. SpaceX has been busily launching the satellites in chunks, flying 60 into orbit at a time. The company currently has 180 satellites in record. The company plans to launch new batches every two weeks in the coming period or so for the rest of 2020.

In a recent tweet by Elon Musk, he promised that Starlink would notinhibit new discoveries or change the character of night sky. However, his assurances haven’t decreased the astronauts community fear, and a authorized paper due for publication later this year argues that the FCC’s approval of Starlink’s plans broke environmental regulation.

According to experts, painting satellites dark is not only an extremely difficult feat of engineering, but it also does not address some of the most pressing concerns of the astronomical community. However, SpaceX has preferred to keep quiet on further questions to comment on the same.

One of many largest issues with portray a satellite tv for pc darkish is heat regulation and not the light. Darkish paint absorbs the heat coming from solar, inflicting the satellite tv for pc to warmth up big quantities after which cool when it goes into the Earth’s shadow.

“Temperatures varying in space is something you don’t want because that means that mechanical structures heat up, they dilate or they contract and when they cool down and heat up, and things aren’t where they’re supposed to be,” he said. He added that some electronics will stop working if they exceed 70 or 80 degrees centigrade.

Designing satellites with a coat of paint that can withstand the rigors of space without peeling off is also no mean feat. SpaceX has not said anything and did not make transparent statement on which material it’s using in its coating.

Addressing to this and criticizing the solution given by Spacex, CTO of Surrey Nanosystems, Ben Jensen said, “It’s not as simple as just picking any old paint and making the satellite darker. And nobody would usually paint a satellite black due to all of the issues it causes. ”

The new black painted satellites are small, mass-produced, and orbit very closely to the Earth to ensure the internet connection they provide is speedy. But that closeness also makes them more visible, and brighter in the night sky.

Coatings like Vantablack or the industry-standard Aeroglaze Z306 are accessible to corporations like SpaceX however are usually solely used to color elements of spacecraft moderately than the entire factor.

The basic requirement to paint is to have the ability resist automatic oxygen particles that flow into as much as 1000 km. into house and aggressively erode substances product of lengthy chains of modules, like paint. Secondly, it needs to be designed so extra risky parts of the paint from being misplaced to house as "out-gas", inflicting the paint to lose mass and flake off.

"Black satellites possibly be worse than lighter ones"

Even if SpaceX is able to manage to navigate the various engineering problems and launch completely dark satellites, these could come againwith their own problems. One of the main ways astronomers look for things like exoplanets is by monitoring the light given out by stars. When a planet passes in front of a star it blocks the light causing a brief flicker that can be detected and investigated – this is called “occultation.” The concern is that dark satellites passing in front of stars could mimic this phenomenon. If asked to experts, their opinion is "we are going to spend an ample amount of time by following this method."

In the coming period of time, Starlink is planned for a total of 42,000 satellites and this massive number of satellite launch signals the launch of IoT revolution. This is what makes this a pressing issue. "If it was a matter of one or two satellites then it was okay and I wouldn't be worrying too much," said GiorgioSavini.

Dark satellites won't probably play devastation with radioastronomy

Painting satellite with black color doesn’t tackle one of many main issues with the Starlink satellites. They might lead to compromise a sub-field of astronomy, referred to as radio astronomy, that research usually invisible wavelengths of sunshine.
